Woman accused of setting up GoFundMe page for murder victims to swindle cash
A suspected conwoman stole nearly £10,000 from a fake GoFundMe page for the families of three murder victims, it is claimed.
Amanda Brown, 32, is alleged to have set up the online page supposedly to help the relatives of three friends killed in a horrific triple homicide.
But she allegedly went on a shopping spree with the ill-gotten gains instead in Florida, even paying a £1,000 water bill.
The alleged fraudster was only caught after the families contacted police when they noticed the unfamiliar donation page, according to US reports.
Brown was arrested and charged on September 20 for allegedly swindling the money.
The fund was set up after Brandon Rollins, 27, Damion Tillman, 23, and Keven Springfield, 30, were murdered at Lake Streety, Florida in July.
Brandon’s mum Dottie Payton said: “She used my name, used my son’s picture to gather money that these people thought they were giving to my family.
“I have no use for her. She can rot.
“She got caught and now she’s going to have to pay for what she did.”
Polk County Sheriff’s Office Chief Steve Lester called her actions “despicable”.
The police chief said: “We have her all over the county spending money.
“She’s at a Walmart, she’s at various ATM machines.
“She even went and paid a $1,300 water bill in Frostproof.”
She was arrested on charges of fraud, grand theft and using the identities of a deceased person after she was busted over separate meth charges, the New York Post reports.
Police are said to have recognised the suspect from CCTV images from a probe into the fake GoFundMe page.
The three friends who were murdered had been due to go fishing when they were beaten and shot by a group of attackers.
Damian was reportedly beaten after arriving at the lake first, with the other two shot after they turned up.
Brandon is said to have called his dad afterwards begging for help.
Authorities said all three had died at the scene by the time help arrived.
Three suspects – brothers Tony “TJ” Wiggins and Robert Wiggins, along with Tony’s girlfriend, Mary Whittemore – have since been charged.
