The 28-year-old was found guilty of murder and attempting to cause GBH with intent, at Stafford Crown Court on Thursday (May 4).

After receiving the verdict, McHugh stormed out of the dock, and in an angry outburst, he shouted "f**k off you pieces of sh*t," at the jury.

Earlier in the trial the court heard that the murderer had used his vehicle as a “weapon” when he deliberately drove into the group.

Rebecca, a criminal justice student at Liverpool University, was rushed to hospital but died as a result of catastrophic injuries.

She had been crossing the road when she was mown down by the vehicle and pulled underneath it before being dragged along the street.

The court heard a second man was also seriously injured when McHugh rammed into the group but survived.

At the time, McHugh had no driving licence, had been drinking heavily, and had taken cocaine before getting behind the wheel.

He was given a life sentence in jail with a minimum term of 18 years after being sentenced jailed today (May 5).

Prosecutor Kevin Hegarty KC said McHugh had used the "power and weight " of his car to use it "as a weapon".

The court heard three people including Rebecca, of Llanymynech, Powys, were hit by the vehicle as it mounted the pavement.

Mr Hegarty added: "The two men were knocked to the side by the offside wing. But Rebecca Steer was near the front of the car.

"As the car increased its speed as it went through the group she was dragged down under the car then dragged then along the roadway as the car came off the pavement.

"The car then went over her, one or more of the wheel's went over her.

"She was crushed and left with multiple rib fractures and catastrophic internal injuries."
