Pizza Hut brings back 90s pie 'The Edge,' in bid for customer nostalgia
Pizza Hut hopes to bring in new customers with an old favorite, the company announced on Tuesday, capitalizing on a consumer trend of reviving old menu items.
The Edge is a thin-crust pizza packed with loaded toppings from edge-to-edge, slathered in tomato sauce, garlic, and herb and cheese seasoning exclusively made for this creation.
Originally introduced back in 1997, The Edge is part of the brand's ‘Newstalgia’ campaign, which began in March of this year. Like other fast food companies, Pizza Hut is aiming to brings back "nostalgic feels" with snacks from a bygone era.
Pizza Hut considers The Edge a "tavern-style" pizza, because it’s cut into 16 squares and comes on a cracker-thin crust. For a limited time, it will be available at participating Pizza Hut locations nationwide for a retail price of $12.99, varying on the location.
It comes in four different options: The Ultimate (pepperoni, Italian sausage, green peppers, onions and tomatoes); The Carnivore (stacked with pepperoni, ham, Italian sausage and bacon); The Vegetarian (green peppers, onions, mushrooms and tomatoes); and Pepperoni Lover’s (only pepperoni).
Pizza Hut is just the latest fast food giant to try and recapture a cultural zeitgeist from years past by reintroducing lost menu items.
Late last year, McDonald's (MCD) brought back its famous McRib sandwich, then announced a limited-run of its Spicy Chicken McNuggets and Mighty Hot Sauce. As of Monday, customers can also expect to see the beverage Hi-C Orange Lavaburst back at the Golden Arches nationwide.
And in early March, Taco Bell announced the comeback of an old menu favorite, the Quesalupa, a flatbread shell taco stuffed with a blend of melted pepper jack and mozzarella cheeses. Meanwhile, Burger King (QSR) brought back its French Toast Sandwich to menus nationwide back in March as well.
