Moment NYC cops plow through crowd of George Floyd protesters with SUV
New York City police officers were filmed plowing into a crowd of George Floyd protesters with SUVs, knocking demonstrators over and sending one flying through the air.
The protest in Brooklyn on Saturday was just one of many demonstrations seen across the country after video emerged of George Floyd’s death on Monday in Minneapolis, Minnesota sparking nationwide outrage. Floyd died after Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for at least four minutes, despite pleas that he could not breathe. Chauvin, 44, has since been charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter, but many are demanding the arrest of three other officers seen in the horrific video.
Saturday marked the third straight night of protests in New York City and several instances of police endangering demonstrators have been caught on camera since Friday.
In the latest incident, an police SUV can be seen pulling up to a crowd of protesters, who put a makeshift barricade in front of the vehicle. Demonstrators began throwing what appear to be plastic bottles at the SUV before a second SUV pulls up alongside the first and begins driving through the crowd, sending some protesters to the ground as people begin screaming.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio commented on the incident late Saturday and placed the blame on the protesters, saying: ‘It’s inappropriate for protesters to surround a police vehicle and threaten police officers. That’s wrong on it’s face.’
‘If a police officer is in that situation, they have to get out of that situation. The video was upsetting, and I wish the officers hadn’t done that, but I also understood that they didn’t start that situation.’
A police source told CBS that the officers were not trying to ‘ram’ to the crowd but to ‘go forward and escape.’ However, protesters are not seen behind the vehicles in the footage, so it would have been possible for the officers to reverse out of the crowd.
New York Congresswoman, Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, has since hit out at the officers’ actions and condemned de Blasio’s response on Twitter.
‘Defending and making excuses for NYPD running SUVs into crowds is wrong,’ she wrote.
‘Running SUVs into a crowd of people should never, ever be normalized. No matter who does it, no matter why.’
‘As mayor, this police department is under your leadership. This moment demands leadership & accountability from each of us. Defending and making excuses for NYPD running SUVs into crowds was wrong. Make it right. De-escalate.’
