The leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats Willie Rennie has slammed Nicola Sturgeon for pushing Scottish independence while his constituents “suffer” amid drug deaths which are the highest in Europe. Mr Rennie had been invited onto Andrew Marr to discuss the prospects of a second referendum on Scottish independence if the pro-independence parties win an overall majority at next week’s elections.

Mr Rennie told Marr: “We have got record-high drug deaths in Scotland.

“The highest in six years in a row, across Europe it is the highest.

“Now I am not going to stand by and have another debate on independence while my constituents are suffering.

“So that is why I am against another independence referendum.”

He turned on the BBC host saying: “I know you love to talk about the hypothetical situations upon hypothetical

“But forgive me I am going to focus on the issues that affect my constituents.

“The fact that Scottish education which used to be one of the best in the world is no longer that.

“People have lost out on massive opportunities, so let’s focus on that Andrew.”
