White House wants to give Joe Biden the power to ban TikTok

The White House is backing a bill in Congress to give the Biden administration new powers to ban Chinese-owned video app TikTok and other foreign technologies that could pose security threats.

On Tuesday, White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said the bipartisan bill sponsored by a dozen senators ‘would strengthen our ability to address discrete risks posed by individual transactions, and systemic risks posed by certain classes of transactions involving countries of concern in sensitive technology sectors’.

‘We look forward to continue working with both Democrats and Republicans on this bill, and urge Congress to act quickly to send it to the President’s desk,’ he said.

Last week, the US House Foreign Affairs Committee voted along party lines to give President Joe Biden the power to ban Chinese-owned TikTok.

Lawmakers voted 24 to 16 to approve the measure to grant the administration new powers to ban the ByteDance-owned app – which is used by over 100 million Americans – as well as other apps considered security risks.

The bill would be voted on by the House this month where it would need to be passed by the full House and US Senate, which is controlled by Democrats before it can go to Biden.
