The UK’s ‘dirtiest’ service station named a ‘disgusting, filthy rat hole’

A good service station can make the longest of road journeys that little bit easier.

But not all of them have that effect for motorists.

According to new analysis the “dirtiest” service station in the UK has been revealed – but, it seems, not everyone agrees with the verdict.

Hippo Leasing analysed a total of 12,738 reviews from 110 of the UK’s official service stations to reveal which of them are the cleanest, dirtiest, cheapest and priciest, based on how many times certain keywords are mentioned within the individual reviews.

And Hopwood Park – a motorway service station in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, situated off Junction 2 of the M42 motorway – has the most negative reviews which the study claims makes it it the UK’s “dirtiest” service station.

The study said:  “When looking at the reviews, Hopwood Park accumulated the most references to words such as “dirty”, “disgusting”, “filthy”, “grim”, “litter”, etc, per review.

“In fact, these words were referenced 140 percent of the time, meaning some of the reviews referenced how dirty the service station was more than once.

“One reviewer left a particularly strong comment: “Disgusting, filthy rat hole.”

Another said: “Disgusting. Filthy.”

But not everyone agrees with the result.

In fact Google reviewers seemed pretty happy with what the services had one offer, with an overall rating of four out of a potential five stars from a total of almost 4,500 reviews.

One said: “A freshly renovated services with plenty of food outlets to choose from!”

And another: “Very well kept service station, clean and tidy. Lots of parking, and good signposting.”

According to the study, Thurrock MOTO, in Purfleet, off the M25, is the second dirtiest UK service station and in third place was Barton Park MOTO, near Richmond, on the A1.

The study analysed 12,738 online reviews written about 110 official motorway service stations listed on Motorway Services Online.

Mentions of 34 keywords in the reviews relating to cleanliness and dirtiness were counted for each service station e.g. clean, tidy, dirty and disgusting along with other keywords.

Hopwood Park services is run by Welcome Break which has been approached for a comment by Express.co.uk

A spokesperson for Motorway Services Online said: “Service stations provide an important opportunity for drivers to take a break from the busy roads.

“Our list of motorway service areas gives drivers a chance to avoid the ones that they know are dirty or unpleasant, to make sure that nobody is having any stress added to their journey.

“Motorway service areas need to provide a consistent experience across the country, because people shouldn’t need to worry about what they might find when they pull up.

“Until that happens, we are happy to help road users work out which places they want to avoid.”
