Residents compared the loud explosion, which happened just after 8am across the Mappleton area, as like a bomb.

RAF fighter jets regularly fly in the area for training and to monitor Russia aircraft which travel near the UK’s airspace.

This led many to blame the noise on a sonic boom created by the aircraft when they break the sound barrier.

This has yet to be confirmed by the Ministry of Defence.

One man said his “whole house was shook”, while another said “the earth shook”.

Individuals took to social media to report what they heard, disturbed by where the bang came from.

One man, who wishes to remain unnamed, said: “I was just inside the house and heard a big bang which shook the house.”

Sarah Jane Hockey said: “It was a huge bang!”
