When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from royal duties in 2020, many Americans appeared sympathetic to their plight. The pair escaped an institution to start a new life in America, the land of the free. The young couple quickly befriended Hollywood’s best and brightest, such as Oprah Winfrey and Ellen Degeneres. However, American support for the Sussexes started to wane following the death of the late Queen Elizabeth II, who captured the hearts of many, and the couple’s tell-all campaign about the Royal Family. Here looks at six signs Harry and Meghan are losing support stateside:

1. Dismal polling

Harry and Meghan’s popularity has sunk following the release of Harry’s tell-all memoir, Spare, on January 10.

Redfield & Wilton polled 2,000 US eligible voters for Newsweek on January 16, six days after the publication of Spare.

Prince Harry was liked by 31 percent and disliked by 38 percent giving him a net approval rating of -7.

Data collected by Redfield & Wilton for Newsweek as recently as December 5 put Harry at +38, meaning he dropped 45 points in just more than a month.

Meghan was viewed favourably by 26 percent of Americans and unfavourably by 39 percent, giving her a net approval rating of -13. This compares to +23 on December 5, a drop of 36 points.

A follow-up poll, conducted by Redfield & Wilton on 19 February, showed that Harry was disliked by 42 percent of Americans, compared to 32 percent who said they liked him.

2. South Park

The Sussexes became the latest celebrities to be satirised by Trey Park and Matt Stone.

The South Park creators took aim at the couple’s alleged privacy demands while embarking on various media adventures in the 26th season of the show.

The animated satire does not name the couple but it appears to poke fun at Harry’s tell-all memoir and the pair’s various media pursuits.

At one point, a young prince and princess appear on a breakfast television show, called Good Morning Canada, holding placards that read “we want privacy” and “stop looking at us”.

3. Chris Rock

Comedian Chris Rock satirised Meghan Markle’s race claim in his new Netflix special, Selective Outrage.

The Saturday Night Live comedian ridiculed comments the Duchess of Sussex made during her interview with Oprah Winfrey, in which she accused an unnamed member of the Royal Family of racism and said that she felt isolated within the royal household.

The comedian ruthlessly mocked Meghan’s claim, suggesting she was simply dealing with “some in-law s***” while noting that she won the “light-skinned lottery”.

4. Rebel’s remarks

Actor Rebel Wilson claimed that Meghan Markle was not as “warm” as Prince Harry when she met the pair out and about in Santa Barbara, California.

The Hollywood actress has a mutual friend with Prince Harry and bumped into the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in Santa Barbara.

Speaking to Watch What Happens Live host Andy Cohen, Rebel said Prince Harry was “lovely” while Meghan was “not as cool” when she bumped into the royal pair in their hometown.

Rebel explained: “We went up to Santa Barbara, met Harry, he could not have been nicer.”

“Had you known them before?” Andy asked the actress.

Rebel continued: “No we just had a mutual friend in common, a polo player. But then, Meghan was not as cool.”

Explaining her comments, Rebel added she believes her mum made the moment awkward.

“Meghan wasn’t as naturally warm, but then, maybe, my mum being Australian asked her all of these slightly rude questions, like ‘Where are your kids?'” she said.

5. Missing key events

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were nowhere to be seen at the 95th Academy Awards show on Sunday night.

Although many have pointed out that the couple were not nominated for an award and Meghan is not currently acting, it comes after the couple have failed to appear at a number of glitzy events.

Harry and Meghan did not attend Oprah’s 69th party back in January, which fuelled speculation that Hollywood was falling out of love with the couple.

This followed the so-called Bafta Tea Party “snub” in January, where sources claimed the couple were “not welcome” at a glitzy BAFTA Tea Party because it would be a “PR disaster”.

6. Saturday Night Live

Saturday Night Live ruthlessly mocked the Duchess of Sussex in a comedy sketch.

Comedian Michael Che ridiculed her possible attendance at the Coronation in May, joking that she was being offered “$19 an hour” to attend as a graphic of the Duchess dressed as a maid appeared behind him.

Appearing on SNL on Saturday night, Che said: “It was reported that the organisers of King Charles’ Coronation have officially invited Meghan Markle.

“And this is nice: at a starting salary of $19-an-hour.”
