Princess Charlotte in line for ‘highest honour possible’ for female royals

Princess Charlotte joins royals for Trooping the Colour

Princess Charlotte is expected to take on the title of Princess Royal when she grows up, the highest possible honour for a woman in the Royal Family.

However, the role is not her birthright, it needs to be earned.

No one has proven it more than the title’s current holder, Princess Charlotte’s great-aunt Princess Anne, the seventh member of the royal brood ever to have held the role.

Known for her strong work ethic and dedication to her royal role, it was awarded to Princess Anne by her mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, in 1987, after being previously held by the late Princess Mary, who died in 1965. 

Princess Charlotte will be the next in line to receive it when Princess Anne dies.

Prince William will likely be left to decide whether or not to award Charlotte the prestigious role, as the title can only be given by the current King or Queen of the country, and only their eldest daughter can take up the role.

Royal author Duncan Larcombe told Town and Country magazine: “The title of Princess Royal is traditionally bestowed on the eldest daughter of the monarch.

“It is a title that remains for life, so Princess Charlotte will have to wait at least until the death of the current Princess Royal.”

If, as is expected, Charlotte takes on the role, she will have big shoes to fill.

Princess Anne is well-known to be the hardest-working royal, a title she has earned year after year.

In 2022 alone she carried out 214 official engagements, more than her brother, King Charles, who undertook 181.

It is expected that Charlotte will follow in the footsteps of her hard-working family in whatever capacity she chooses.

This news of a potentially huge title change comes after it was reported that she could miss out on dukedom unless she marries a duke, whereas her brothers Prince George and Louis will receive one no matter who they marry.
