Prince William and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge have only just recently begun to show how close they are through affectionate gestures after years of rather shy displays. But despite the pair being very mindful not to let out too much how deeply they care for each other, they were once forced into a very public kiss to abide by royal tradition and meet public expectations. Royal commentators Dr Anna Whitelock and Julia Montagu reflected on how Prince Charles and Princess Diana became the first newly-married royals to kiss on the balcony, setting an example Kate and William had to follow when they married in 2011.

Discussing the importance of Buckingham Palace’s front balcony with Channel 5, Dr Whitelock said: “It is the place where the Royal Family and the public connect.”

Ms Montagu added: “Walking out there and seeing the crowds of people cheering must be overwhelming.”

The narrator Glynis Barber continued: “This stone platform has become the place where we welcome new monarchs and celebrate royal marriages.

“On this balcony, some traditions have been shaped by popular demand.

“Prince George of Kent and Princess Marina became the first royals to wave to the crowds in 1934.

“In 1981, Prince Charles and Princess Diana bowed to the crowd’s cheers and became the first newlyweds to kiss on the balcony.

“This is a tradition that continues today”

Keeping the public engaged and excited about the Royal Family is key to ensuring the monarch’s survival.

And Kate and William have shown over the past year they remain committed to supporting the monarchy in full as they stepped up while both the Queen and Prince Charles were forced to shield because of the coronavirus pandemic.

But despite younger generations helping out more and more, royal expert Bob Morris insisted that Prince Charles will have to find new ways to ensure the continuity of the monarchy when he is King.

During an interview with Express.co.uk, he reflected on this challenge for Prince Charles as well as others.

Mr Morris said: “I think first he must remain politically neutral in all respects.

“That means perhaps withdrawing a little bit from some of the positions he has taken in the past.

“Although, a lot of them are now seen as to have some sense.

“The point is, nonetheless, one must remain politically neutral.

“He must avoid any hint of scandal or corruption.”
