Graham Smith told that Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis should be allowed and encouraged to follow a similar path to Zara Tindall. The members of the Royal Family that have been coined as spare are those that are not a direct heir to the throne.

Mr Smith said: “I think if they have got any sense at all Charlotte and Louis will go down the route of people like Zara Phillips and just do their own thing.

“If they have got any sense at all Charles and William will tell them that is what they need to do.

“The large number of hangers-on who have nothing to lose and nothing to gain are the ones that cause the most trouble.

“Why are we putting all these people through this nonsense?

“Just tell them they can do their own thing, I think it was probably a mistake to give them titles in the first place.

“The whole thing is increasingly farcical and as these people grow up in a more connected and the modern world, they will be increasingly fed up with their lot in life, despite how luxurious their lot is.”

Republic is an organisation that campaigns for the monarchy to be abolished.

However, Republic’s views have been strongly criticised by royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams.

Prince Charles 'most concerned' about royal future says expert

Mr Fitzwilliams told that the Royal Family will successfully transition when Prince Charles takes the throne.

He said: “People will not expect Charles to be the same [as the Queen] as no one could be, but the responsibilities of the role are the same and I don’t doubt he will perform them well, though obviously for a far shorter period of time.

“His work for the Prince’s Trust and for the environment will count in his favour too.

“William has established considerable public support for his role as our future king and his campaigns on mental health, to preserve endangered wildlife species and for the environment are excellent and his partnership with Kate, the future Queen Consort, is extremely popular.

“In time their children and their spouses will perform royal duties too.”

Republicanism in the UK was found to be at around 20 percent in a recent poll.

The royal commentator told regarding Republic’s anti-royal campaign: “This is not an accurate summary of the current standing of the Royal Family, which according to YouGov is roughly where it has usually been, with only around 20 percent for republicanism, which is its usual level of support.”

He added: “In an average year, the royals carry out some 2,000 engagements each year and have over 3,000 patronages. These are rightly coveted.”
