The Queen Mother played a key role in preventing Prince Philip’s family from attending his wedding, according to royal commentators. The Duke of Edinburgh married the then Princess Elizabeth in November 1947, just shortly after the Second World War ended. Channel 5 documentary, ‘The Queen Mother’, explained why the reasoning behind the decision to exclude Philip’s family from the ceremony.

Historian Dr Chandrika Kaul told viewers: “Elizabeth was determined that Philip’s family members were not welcome.

“This was because all four of Philip’s sisters had married into the German Royal Family.

“In particular, two of his brothers-in-law were members of the Nazi Party.

“Philip was very angry, naturally, that his family was being sidelined in this very public fashion.”

She continued: “The wedding was a national celebration.

“The people cheering in the streets were genuinely pleased and happy for the young couple.

“It represented hope after years of suffering in the war.

“This was the ray of sunshine that the people needed.”

Dr Kaul added that Philip’s family baggage on his Mountbatten side also made the Queen Mother weary of him.

According to the historian, she “didn’t really like” his uncle, Louis Mountbatten.

She reportedly thought him to be a “social climber” and “very pushy”.
