Both the Duke of Sussex and Duke of Cambridge were enrolled at Eton: William in 1995 and Harry starting in 1998. Contemporaries shared their experiences, including how they were simply referred to as ‘Wales’.

Former classmate Jim graduated from Eton in 2004, a year after Harry.

He said neither brother was treated differently from their classmates.

Jim told The Cut magazine: “The attitude towards them was very matter of fact.

“The only thing that would really give it away is everyone gets a school calendar and list of all the boys in school, called Fixtures, and it’s this 300-page green booklet that tells you who all the boys are.

“If you were a lord you’d have a Mister before your name. The princes were HRH.

“It was funny though because no one gave a s***.

“I think both William and Harry were just called ‘Wales,’ literally that was what everyone else called them.”

Another classmate shared how there was a “big effort” made to make Harry like “a normal person”.

The peer, named Alexander, told the outlet: “Obviously he was from the Royal Family, but I think the school and all the people there wanted to make him feel included.

“He had normal friends; he used to go to people’s birthday parties.

“He used to go out with people in London and go to clubs.

“He had bodyguards but they’d kind of hang in the background and try and let him develop and grow up and live his life as much as possible.”

William and Harry were said to have shared a close bond as children, although their relationship has been strained in recent years over the Sussex royals decision to leave the Royal Family.

According to William however, he and Harry are “uniquely bonded because of what we’ve been through”.

In a video posted to the Kensington Royal Twitter account in 2017, the brothers and Kate Middleton discussed mental health.

The Duke of Cambridge referenced the death of Princess Diana and said in the clip: “We have been brought closer together because of the circumstances…we are uniquely bonded because of what we’ve been through.

“But even Harry and I over the years have not talked enough about our mother.”

Carolyn Robb, a former royal chef, shared how William and Harry used to “fly in and out” of the kitchen as children.

She told Yahoo! Style: “When William and Harry were small, they loved to come into the kitchen.

“Being an old palace with wooden floorboards you could usually hear them running around upstairs.”

Sharing how the brothers would hide in the cupboards, she added: “We fortunately had some quite low down cupboards so we could hide Harry; except usually his giggling gave him away.”
