Royal experts failed to spot the “signs” of Prince Harry’s early relationship with Meghan Markle, according to a new Channel 5 documentary, ‘’Charles & Harry: Father and Son Divided’. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex began dating in early July 2016, but were not discovered until the end of October that year. Mail on Sunday Royal Editor Emily Andrews described a meeting with the Prince before his new girlfriend was confirmed.

She told viewers: “It’s all very formal obviously when you’re covering the royals.

“There we were in one of the very smart rooms in Buckingham Palace and Harry came bounding over, saying ‘Hi Em, how are you doing?’

“I was like, ‘You’re tanned! Or is it burnt?’

“He said, ‘Yeah, I know. Africa was amazing, it was so good’.”

Ms Andrews continued: “I thought, ‘Wow, Harry’s in a good mood’.

“I had never seen him quite so animated and quite so happy.

“That was about six weeks before the news broke that he was dating Meghan Markle.

“Of course, one of their first dates had been in Botswana.”

The Duchess of Sussex later described the period before they were outed: “We had a good five, six months almost with just privacy, which was amazing.”

By the end of the year, Meghan had met Prince Charles, but a “wave of abuse and harassment” from the media had also sparked concern.

In response, Harry issued an unexpected statement in November, pleading for the press and trolls to lay off his girlfriend.

It read: “Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her.

“It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm.

“He knows commentators will say this is ‘the price she has to pay’ and that ‘this is all part of the game’. He strongly disagrees. This is not a game – it is her life and his.”

Even Prince William was forced to weigh in after rumours that he was unhappy with his brother’s decision to open up about his relationship.

His statement read: “The Duke of Cambridge absolutely understands the situation concerning privacy and supports the need for Prince Harry to support those closest to him.”
