One lane shut as a result of the collision, on the eastbound carriageway between junction 46 for Llangyfelach and junction 45 for Ynysforgan in south Wales. The slip road for junction 45 was shut so traffic was diverted through Morriston.
Queues are back to beyond junction 47 for Penllergaer and Tircoed, a stretch of around five miles.
It happened at around 8.15am, Wales Online reports, and police arrived soon afterwards.
Photos taken on traffic cameras see cars bumper to bumper on the carriageway.
Due to the crash, motorists are taking diversions on local roads through Morriston and Pentre-Poeth.
Therefore, the A48 and A4067 are also congested in Swansea itself.
It’s the third serious crash on Wales’ major roads in the last two days after three vehicles and a van collided on Tuesday and later on Tuesday, a caravan overturned on the M4.
