King Charles briefed about alleged ‘Chinese spy’ in Westminster

King Charles was briefed all about the arrest of an alleged Chinese spy earlier this year, in a sign of how seriously the Government took the potential security threat.

Two men, including a parliamentary researcher who has worked alongside several senior Tory MPs, were arrested in March over suspicions they had been spying for China.

At this time the case was kept secret from the public, however the King was one of a very small number who were kept up to date with all the information from the arrests.

It is understood he was told as part of his national security briefings, with the arrests not becoming public knowledge until last week.

A source said told the Daily Mail: “Only about ten people in the country knew the details and one of them was the King.”

It is possible that Charles knew about the spying allegations at the time of his Coronation in May, which was attended by China’s Vice President Han Zheng.

While in the UK the Chinese Vice President met several senior figures of royal and political life, including Prince William, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden.

The former parliamentary aide has strongly denied the allegations against him.

This week Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been in the royal spotlight as they attended the 2023 Invictus Games in Düsseldorf, Germany, which came to a close on Saturday night.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier also attended the closing ceremony, which saw Rita Ora and Sam Ryder perform for the crowd and Harry take to the stage for his final speech.

The Duke of Sussex paid tribute to the veterans and their efforts throughout the Games, saying: “As you have seen and experienced, this week is so much more than a sporting event. It is a platform for positive change. We hope you too are feeling it deeply. I am sure, you’re all physically exhausted, but I also hope you are mentally stronger than when you arrived.”

Meghan was pictured in the audience beaming and clapping as her husband spoke, although he did not mention her in his address.

Harry added: “We may have provided the platform but you provided the magic. We’ve all witnessed the true impact sport has had on your recovery and on your post traumatic growth, but you will never truly know the impact that your actions this week have had on millions of people around the world.

“You have opened people’s hearts through your vulnerability, through your resilience and through your sheer abilities.

“My hope is that every memory made brings a smile to your face through a sense of belonging and an opportunity for you and your family to look forward with pride and purpose.”
