Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, 39, is a keen amateur photographer and usually takes the official portraits of her children Prince George, seven, Princess Charlotte, five, and Prince Louis, three, which are released on their birthdays. Prince Louis is celebrating his third birthday today and to mark the special milestone a new picture of the young royal was shared by Kensington Palace.

The adorable photo was taken by Kate and shows little Louis beaming at the camera as he sits astride a bright red bicycle.

Kate took the picture in the grounds of Kensington Palace on Wednesday which was Louis’s first day at nursery school.

The Duchess’s passion for photography extends further than taking family snaps and she is patron of of The Royal Photographic Society.

Kate also spearheaded the Hold Still lockdown photography project with the National Portrait Gallery the results of which have since been turned in a book.

However, it is the Duchess’s candid pictures of her children that endear her to royal fans as they give a behind the scenes glimpse at the Cambridges’ home life.

Writing in the Telegraph, author and journalist Harry Mount claimed Kate and William’s willingness to share official pictures of their children is part of an unwritten deal with paparazzi.

Reflecting on Kate’s new birthday photo of Louis, Mr Mount wrote: “Prince Louis, the Cambridges’ youngest son, turns three today – on St George’s Day – and you can already begin to see his character emerging.

“He is the classic, cheeky, third-child scamp.”

Mr Mount added: “It’s the royal tradition to release a picture on a child’s third birthday – part of the unwritten deal that, in return for official photographs, the paparazzi will leave the Royal family alone.

“It helps, too, that the Duchess of Cambridge has become a considerable photographer in her own right which means her subjects are at their most relaxed for her to capture these fun intimate portraits.

“The sort you only get from a little boy looking at his beloved mother, pleased as punch that he’s mastered the crucial little boy’s art of turning his bike handlebars – racing style.”

Body language expert and author Judi James analysed the picture of Louis for Express.co.uk and claimed he is more like mum Kate than dad William.

Judi said: “Louis has always looked like such a happy, active, chatty and fun-loving baby and toddler and here in his third birthday portrait he is showing that nothing has changed.

“With his very Middleton features he seems to have inherited a spirit and an exuberant confidence that this photo captures perfectly.”

How is Louis celebrating his third birthday?

Louis started at Willcocks nursery earlier this week and according to the school’s website its pupils get to enjoy cake with classmates on their birthdays.

So, Louis may have celebrated at nursery with his new friends before having a special get together with family at Kensington Palace in the evening.

The Cambridge family are based in London during term time but usually spend the holidays at their country home Anmer Hall.

The gorgeous Norfolk property is said to be where Kate feels most at home and is usually where she chooses to spend her birthday every year.
