The Prince and Princess of Wales have made a surprise appearance at a coronation event in Windsor.

They are greeting concert-goers along The Long Walk at Windsor Castle ahead of the coronation concert this evening.

William and Kate thanked well-wishers for their support and shook peoples’ hands.

Kate is wearing a pale blue suit jacket and white top, and William is wearing a dark suit jacket and white shirt.

At one point, Kate picked up a small union flag on a stick which had fallen on the floor and handed it to the well-wisher who dropped it.

Scores of people crowded around the couple, with William crouching down to chat to a boy and girl wearing golden crowns.

The prince and princess looked relaxed, with William telling one group of well-wishers: ‘Enjoy the concert tonight’.

When the couple first walked over to chat to family groups picnicking ahead of the concert, William was offered a drink in a union-flag decorated paper cup by a group of women who all wore yellow-coloured cloth crowns.

He took a sip and later handed it to his wife, who drank from the cup and appeared to like it.

The prince was fascinated by a collection of canned drinks the women had before them, and he pointed at one and asked ‘that’s from Windsor?’.

The public swarmed around the couple and William and Kate crouched down to talk to children with their parents, and they both posed separately with people for group photographs and selfies.

At one point Kate gave a teary youngster, who was wearing a headband with union flag deely boppers and navy dress covered in patriotic motifs, a long hug and the girl burst into tears.

Later on William is set to take to the stage to deliver a speech during the concert, with Kensington Palace sharing behind-the-scenes footage of the prince during rehearsals.

A number of other royals are making appearances up and down the country to mark the Coronation Big Lunch – an event encouraging people to hold picnics and street parties to better get to know their neighbours and community.

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh attended an event in Cranleigh, Surrey, and it seems the weather is staying dry for most people – unlike the washout on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence will attend a community street party in Swindon.

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie will also be attending a Big Lunch in Windsor.

Plus prime minister Rishi Sunak hosted an event at 10 Downing Street for volunteers and Ukrainian refugees.

You can find Big Lunch events taking place near you via the Eden Project Communities website which includes an interactive map of events.
