Huge fire at Beirut port just over a month after explosion destroyed city

A large blaze has broken out at Beirut’s sea port just over a month after a huge explosion devastated the city.

Video footage shows thick plumes of smoke and flames coming from the wreckage in the Lebanese capital’s port area on Thursday.

A Lebanese military source said the fire broke out in a warehouse storing tyres and oil. However, the cause of the blaze is not yet known.

The blaze comes just over a month after the city was destroyed by two explosions at the sea port on August 4, triggered by thousands of tonnes of ammonium nitrate unsafely stored in a warehouse for years.

It claimed the lives of 190 people, injured 6,000 others and left 300,000 homeless.

Beirut has been grappling with a deep economic crisis and a surge in coronavirus cases resulting in a shortage of medical supplies, with the explosion forcing the city to plunge further into devastation.
