Royal Mail employees will strike during a critical time for the UK’s postal services, unions announced today. Members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) have voted for industrial action during a long-running dispute with the service that falls over Christmas. The union has planned the strikes to continue from this week for one month, ending on December 24.

When are the Royal Mail strikes?

The CWU has planned 10 days worth of strikes for the end of 2022 over both November and December.

While just over a week in total, the dates will cover the next two months, spanning Black Friday and most of the Christmas shopping period.

The union’s nearly 115,000 members at Royal Mail will withdraw their labour as they aim to renegotiate pay offers.

The strike days announced by the CWU include the following dates:

  • November 24
  • November 25
  • November 30
  • December 1
  • December 9
  • December 11
  • December 14
  • December 15
  • December 23
  • December 24

Why are Royal Mail staff on strike?

The CWU is locked in a pay dispute with Royal Mail, with the union claiming members have had an “unagreed” two percent pay rise “imposed” on them.

Officials said members must navigate the rising cost of living while the company pays out giant sums to shareholders.

In a statement, the CWU said the Royal Mail posted group profits of £758 million, adding that 97.6 percent of employees voted for strike action.

A spokesman said the CWU wants a “negotiated settlement” with Royal Mail Group and pledged to “continue to engage the company”.

At the same time, they added the union would not allow the company to “destroy the livelihoods of postal workers”.

The Royal Mail, on the other hand, said it had offered staff a one percent pay rise over 18 months while committing to make Sunday working voluntary and holding off on compulsory redundancies until March 2023.

Simon Thompson, the company’s chief executive, said he also hoped to reach a deal with the CWU but called on the union to change tack.

He told bosses that “time is running out for the CWU to change their position and avoid further damaging strike action”.

A spokesman for the Royal Mail said the union should focus on the “long-term health of the business”.

They said: “Our preference is for an agreement with the CWU but the change we need is not optional.

They should be focused on a resolution to this dispute for their members and the long-term health of the business, rather than damaging strike action.”
