Freezing fog brings travel disruption as cold weather alert set to last weekend
People in large parts of England woke up to a blanket of fog this morning, with warnings of travel chaos and more cold weather to come.
Striking photographs from those up early showed how landscapes were obscured, while frost lay on the ground.
Some still braved the cold to go jogging, though, while others were prompted out to take their dogs for a walk.
And the sunrise scenes may have made it all worth it for photographers, with soft pink and yellow skies creating a beautiful backdrop over waterways or landmarks.
Those with somewhere to go in a hurry may have felt less poetic about the weather, however, with yellow warnings for fog in place in the morning urging motorists to take care and leave more time for their journeys.
They said buses and trains could be delayed, while the disruption could also affect flights.
The wintry weather is set to linger, with more fog expected to form in the south this evening, spreading into the Midlands overnight.
By tomorrow the fog will mostly clear, but cold temperatures will remain, with a government alert in place urging people to check on vulnerable friends and family.
Overnight, some southern areas could see the mercury dip below zero, going as low as -2C in some places.
The Level 2 cold alert will be in place until 9am on Monday.
People who are vulnerable, such as the elderly and those with a health condition or reduced mobility, have been advised to hear their homes to at least 18°C.
Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Dan Rudman said: ‘Temperatures in central and southern England are expected to trend downwards from Thursday, with overnight minimum temperatures possibly getting to -4 °C in some rural areas, but widespread below-freezing conditions elsewhere overnight in the following days.
‘This will result in some harsh frosts and possible freezing fog in some places.
‘Temperatures will stay subdued through the next few days from Thursday in the alerted areas, with highs likely to remain in the mid-to-low single figures through the weekend, especially in places where any fog or low cloud lingers throughout the day.’
