Driver somehow escapes serious injury despite car being impaled by pole

A driver has been described as ‘lucky to be alive’ after his car was impaled by a pole when he crashed into a fence.

The man, 21, ploughed into a metal fence and landed in a ditch on Desford Lane, Kirby Muxloe, Leicestershire, at 6am on September 15.

He was later arrested by Leicestershire Police on suspicion of drink driving.

Images of the incident show how the pole impaled the car through the driver’s window and landed in front of the seat’s headrest.

The driver was taken to hospital, but officers said his injuries were not believed to be serious.

A spokesperson for Leicester Police Response Team said: ‘[We] assisted colleagues from Hinckley Police and Blaby Police this morning at a road traffic collision near Ratby.

‘The initial photo may look picturesque but as the driver pointed out “lucky to be alive”.’
