The driver was initially seen using their mobile phone, with officers deciding to pull them over on the M62 in Merseyside.

When they reached the vehicle, they were stunned to find the motorist also stirring a milky brew, the Liverpool Echo reports.

A photo shared by an official police Twitter account shows the full mug, complete with a tea bag, alongside a kettle in the vehicle.

The incident took place on Monday morning.

The motorist was issued with a Traffic Offence Report, which normally results in a fine.

Drivers can also be ordered to attend an awareness course.

The tweet, sent from a North West Motorway Police account, read: “We couldn’t believe this one. #MC21 stopped a vehicle on the M62 for the driver using their mobile phone whilst driving.

“When he stopped the car, he noticed the driver was also in the process of making a cup of tea.

“Needless to say, a Traffic Offence Report was issued.”
