COVID-19: Fake NHS text asks for bank details in return for coronavirus vaccine

People are being warned about a fake NHS text which is demanding bank details from people waiting for a coronavirus vaccine.

Liverpool City Council said in a “scam alert” that the message had been “circulating”, advising people they were eligible for a COVID-19 jab.

The National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) also tweeted a warning, reminding those waiting to be immunised that “vaccinations are free”.

“The NHS will never arrive unannounced at your home to administer the vaccine,” the NPCC said.

“They will never ask for bank/card details, PIN or banking passwords.”

The NPCC is asking people to share the alert with “friends and family who may be at risk or who are expecting to receive a vaccine”.

Liverpool City Council said: “Your GP will be in touch when it’s your turn and won’t ask for bank details.

“If you doubt that a message or call is genuine, contact your GP.”

The Moderna vaccine, meanwhile, has become the third coronavirus jab to be approved for use in the UK – with an additional 10 million doses ordered.

The US-based company’s vaccine was shown to have 94% efficacy against the illness in final trials.

Hundreds of thousands of COVID vaccine doses will be delivered daily by the end of next week, the prime minister has promised.
