King Charles was joined by the Prince and Princess of Wales in meeting seas of royal superfans packed along The Mall on Friday.

The crowd erupted in cheers as the trio stepped out to chat and shake hands over a metal barrier.

Kate was heard thanking people who had queued for hours – and some overnight – to see them outside Buckingham Palace.

‘Will you see anything?’ Charles jokingly asked one wellwisher who insisted they would still be there on Saturday.

Many fans had waited for hours to catch a glimpse of the royals, with some camping out overnight.

Among the devoted were John Loughrey, from Streatham, south London, and his friend Carol – who have been sleeping there since last Thursday with only a loose tarp to protect them from the elements.

Decked out in royal memorabilia clothing and badges, 68-year-old John explained he wanted ‘to get a good spot and enjoy the build-up’.

Retired nurse Linda McQuaid, who also forewent a tent, told MailOnline: ‘It was fine. I was really warm – sleeping bag inside a survival bag. I got my head right inside there.

‘I’m really excited because I think the pageantry, the history, the British constitution, you can’t beat it really.’
