Boy, 14, arrested as delivery driver fights for his life after 'carjacking'

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested after a violent carjacking left a delivery driver in critical condition in hospital.

The victim was delivering an Indian takeaway to David Speed who said he saw the thieves reverse the man’s Mercedes into him when he tried to chase after his car.

Mr Speed, 42, told Manchester Evening News that he heard his doorbell ring and then heard the victim shout ‘no, no, no’.

When he opened his door he reportedly saw the victim, a man in his 50s, running after the car and grabbing onto it through the passenger window.

He said the victim grabbed hold of the car and the car reversed, adding: ‘Then it pulled out and sped off with him holding onto it.

‘They then sped off, leaving the victim in the middle of the road.’

He added: ‘He was bleeding everywhere. It was just horrible. I was just disgusted someone would do that.’

Other neighbours in Romiley, Greater Manchester, came out onto the street to help the injured man as one woman held him.

Police were called at about 9pm on Friday and later arrested the teenager on suspicion of robbery. He remains in custody.

They believe there were other people involved in the robbery and are urging witnesses to come forward.

Detective Inspector Charlotte Whalley said: ‘This was a horrific ordeal that has rocked the community and has left the delivery driver fighting for his life in hospital.

‘At this stage, it is thought there were others involved in the incident and we’re currently carrying out a number of lines of enquiry to trace those believed to be responsible.

‘We’re continuing to ask the public to come forward with any information that may assist us – even the smallest bit of information can prove vital.

‘Anyone who may have seen a silver Mercedes in the area at the time or may have seen it in suspicious circumstances since is asked to get in touch – this vehicle could prove vital in our investigation.’
