BMW flew through the air during 90mph chase with pregnant passenger inside

A father had a 28-weeks pregnant passenger when he led police on a terrifying high-speed chase in a stolen car.

James Ryan, 29, was reportedly travelling at such a pace that the car went airborne at the crest of a hill almost causing him to lose control of it.

He also sped at 90mph through 30mph limits, went the wrong way around traffic islands and almost caused a head-on collision with another car before he crashed into a garden wall and tried to flee on foot, reported DerbyshireLive.

Jailing him for 14 months, Recorder Adrian Reynolds said: “This was clearly not just a stupid piece of driving, it was an insane piece of driving. Driving off from the police like that is one of the most serious things you could have done.

“You put other people in the car, including a girl who was 28 weeks pregnant, at huge risk of danger. You drove for a long period, it was not just a rash error of judgement.

“You were determined to do everything you could to get away from the police. At one point the car was launched into the air such was the speed you were driving.

“You have no thought whatsoever to yourself, the innocent people in the car with you or other members of the public, all of whom could have been killed.

“The only reason it came to an end was because you ploughed into a brick wall and even when you did you still tried to escape on foot.”

Almas Ben-Aribia, prosecuting at Derby Crown Court, said the incident took place overnight on June 3 and 4 of this year.

She said the owner of the car, a black BMW, left it at a house having decided not to drive home and believed the defendant then took the keys out of his jacket pocket and stole it.

The prosecutor said: “At around 3am on June 4 police on patrol spotted the BMW in Chesterfield, illuminated its emergency lights and accelerated away at speed. It travelled the wrong way around a roundabout and then took the crest of a hill at such a speed that it went in the air.

“It then went down Heath Road and finally Queensway (in Holmewood) where he lost control, skidded off the carriageway and drove into a garden wall where he got out of the driver’s side and ran off, where he was caught.

“There were three others in the vehicle, one of them was a woman who was 28 weeks pregnant.”

Mr Ryan has six previous convictions for 15 offences, including past driving matters. Christopher Brewin, mitigating, said his client acknowledges he “had given no thought for the safety of the passengers” but claims he did not know the woman was pregnant.

The judge disqualified Ryan from driving for two years and three months.
