Fire station forecourts fell silent yesterday, with local residents, mourning families and politicians attending in support. The deaths of more than 2,300 service men and women are reflected upon on Firefighters Memorial Day on May 4.

Fire Brigades Union general secretary Matt Wrack said: “This is a huge moment of unity for us as we remember their courage and sacrifice.We must make sure they are honoured and remembered.”
