Explosive device at gender reveal party started massive wildfires

A smoke generating explosive device used at a gender reveal party caused a wildfire that has raged across 7,050 acres in California, seeing many residents fleeing their homes under evacuation orders.

A state of emergency has been declared for several counties in the state, including San Bernardino, where the blaze began.

Firefighters said the raging inferno, dubbed the El Dorado Fire, was sparked by a smoke generating device used by a couple to reveal the gender of their baby at a party in El Dorado Ranch Park.

The fire started on Saturday just before 10:30am and flames quickly spread to nearby Yucaipa Ridge – a wilderness spot popular with hikers. Within an hour people living nearby were being told to leave their homes.

The fire service yesterday issued a statement reminding people that ‘those responsible for starting fires due to negligence or illegal activity can be held financially and criminally responsible’.

Last night saw dry, hot weather with wind meaning the fire would have been ‘active’ throughout the night, authorities said.

A record-breaking heat wave continues to sweep across Southern California which hit a sweltering 49C on Sunday afternoon.

It is the highest official temperature ever recorded in LA County, according to the US National Weather Service.

Temperatures are only set to cool down on Tuesday but will still remain hotter than normal for the rest of the week.

It is not know what gender the baby is going to be.
