Bookies slash odds on England hosting 2022 World Cup after Platini arrest
Leading bookmaker Coral has cut its odds into evens, from 6-1, on Qatar being stripped of the 2022 World Cup.
It comes after Michel Platini was arrested today over the awarding of the tournament.
Coral also slashed the odds on England hosting the competition to 6-1, from 10-1.
“Since it was awarded the 2022 World Cup, there has been nothing but controversy around why Qatar were selected as hosts and following this latest development, the betting suggests there is a strong chance they could now be stripped of the tournament,” said Coral’s John Hill.
Qatar is in the middle of a diplomatic crisis after several neighbouring Arab nations cut off diplomatic relations.
Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt led a blockade of Qatar back in 2017.
They accuse the state of supporting terrorism.
It was also rumoured last year the tournament was about to be stripped from Qatar.
But the Qatari ambassador to Germany Sheikh Saoud bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani claimed Saudi Arabia was peddling fake news stories against Doha.
The strategy is likely to be backed by other Middle Eastern states.
